Lord Vishnu had taken the half man - half lion incarnation many millennia before, in order to kill the demon king Hiranyakashipu, who was abusing and try to murder his own devotee son, Prahlad, simply because Prahlad worshipped Lord Vishnu as the Supreme. Hiranyakashipu who wanted everyone to worship him was greatly disappointed by hearing his own son chanting the names of Maha Vishnu. All the efforts of Hiranyakashipu in changing the mind of Prahlad were in vain. At last he got angry with his son and decided to kill him. But each time Hiranyakashipu tries to kill Prahlad Lord Vishnu’s magical hands were there to protect him. The angry and arrogant Hiranyakashipu eventually cursed Prahlad and inquired, “Where do you obtain the power to defy my supremacy?”
“The source of my strength is Lord Vishnu,” replied the fearless Prahlad. “He is the source of everyone’s strength, including yours.”

Hiranyakashipu furious decided to challenge Prahlad, “O most unfortunate Prahlad, you have always described an all-pervading supreme controller beyond me. If He is everywhere, then why is He not present before me in this pillar? If he does not appear from this pillar, then today your head will be severed with my sword.”

With these words, Hiranyakashipu struck his fist at the pillar, from which emanated a sound that seemed to crack the covering of the universe. To prove true the statement of His devotee Prahlad, the Supreme Lord appeared from the pillar in a form never seen before, a form neither man nor lion, the form of Sri Nrsimhadeva. The furious Nrsimha then grabbed Hiranyakasipu, pulled him to his lap and tore open his body with his claws to kill the asura. After killing the demon, Lord Nrsimha was furious and was pacified only when his devotee Prahlad touched his feet.
